Hiram Kasten: A Legacy of Laughter and Resilience
In the world of comedy, only a select few manage to experience long-term success. Those who do are revered for their ability to make people laugh day in and day out. Hiram Kasten was one of those figures, turning his love for performing into a full-time career that spanned many avenues. Sadly, the comedic world has lost a beloved figure as Kasten passed away at the age of 71, a loss confirmed in a heartfelt Facebook post.

From a young age, Kasten dreamed of being a performer. His journey began immediately after college when he landed his first role in a revival of Israel Horovitz’s play, “Line,” at the 13th Street Repertory Theatre in New York City. This marked the beginning of a career filled with both stage and screen performances.
Kasten’s early years in the theater were foundational, but it was in stand-up comedy where he truly thrived. After navigating the ups and downs of the industry, Kasten found his home at The Comic Strip, a comedy club emceed by none other than Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld recognized Kasten’s talent, making him a regular at the club and sparking a lifelong friendship. This connection led to Kasten’s appearances on “Seinfeld,” where he played Elaine’s co-worker, adding his unique flair to the iconic show.
Kasten’s talents weren’t confined to just one show. His comedic genius graced numerous television series, including “Saved by the Bell,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” showcasing his versatility and enduring appeal.
However, life off-stage presented Kasten with formidable challenges. In recent years, he battled Crohn’s disease and prostate cancer. By 2017, his health began to seriously decline, prompting him to step back from his career and share the gravity of his condition with close friends.
On June 16, Hiram Kasten passed away at his home in New York, held in the arms of his wife, Diana, shortly after celebrating their 38th anniversary. He leaves behind his daughter, Millicent Jade, and his brother-in-law, Kevin John Kisiel.
Hiram Kasten’s journey is a testament to his resilience and passion for making people laugh. His ability to find humor amidst life’s adversities is a legacy that will continue to inspire.
