Former House special committee on the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), criticized former President Donald Trump for daring to visit the Capitol for the first time since the attack.
Hold onto your hats, folks! The political theater is back in full swing as the ever-dramatic Bennie Thompson expressed his outrage over Trump’s audacious visit to the Capitol. Yes, the same Capitol where Trump, in Thompson’s melodramatic view, is solely responsible for the “deadly insurrection.”
Thompson released a statement condemning Trump’s visit to D.C., questioning how Trump could dare show his face on the Capitol grounds. He added that the Congressional GOP had shown a complete disregard for democracy by allowing Trump to visit the halls of Congress.
Oh, the horror! A former president visiting the seat of American democracy! How scandalous! Perhaps Thompson has forgotten that Trump, love him or hate him, is still a former president with every right to visit the Capitol.
In the morning, Trump met with House Republicans and had a separate lunch with the Senate GOP at the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s headquarters.
This marks the first time Trump has returned to Capitol Hill since his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. You’d think from Thompson’s reaction that Trump was leading the charge himself, but let’s not let facts get in the way of a good outrage story.
Just two weeks before his Capitol visit, Trump was convicted by a 12-person jury in New York on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, all part of an attempt to conceal a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
Ah yes, the hush money scandal. Because nothing screams “integrity of the judicial system” like digging up a scandal from years ago to try and tarnish Trump’s reputation further. But remember, Trump has faced worse and come out stronger.
There are three felony indictments still remaining against Trump, two of which are related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
In his statement, Thompson argued that Trump has shown disrespect for the rule of law and has continuously divided and spread hate in the country.
Really, Thompson? Disrespect for the rule of law? From the same party that has weaponized the justice system at every turn to go after Trump? The irony is rich, my friends.
Despite the relentless attacks, Trump’s return to the Capitol is a testament to his resilience. Meeting with House Republicans and Senate GOP members shows he’s far from finished and still has a significant influence in the political arena.
Trump’s ability to face his critics head-on, even in the belly of the beast, is what sets him apart. While the left continues to flail about with their accusations and legal witch hunts, Trump remains undeterred, focused on what truly matters: the future of this country.
As the 2024 election looms, Thompson and his cohort should brace themselves. Trump’s return isn’t just a visit; it’s a declaration. He’s back, and he’s ready to fight for the American people once again.
Stay tuned, America. The saga continues, and Trump isn’t backing down. If Thompson thought a few legal battles would keep Trump out of the game, he’s sorely mistaken. The stage is set, and Trump is ready to take on all comers.
